Minutes: Shirley Brown stated that the Board does not usually respond to citizens comments but she received about 100 emails on the tennis courts issue. She urged the public to watch the morning work session where the tennis court issue was discussed. One of the things she learned that surprised her was that there are only 20 students on the Sarasota High tennis team and there are no PE classes that use the tennis courts. The Board looked at other possible sites, but it does not look like any other site will work. She stated that there are 12 courts nearby at Payne Park that the County operates. We have already given up part of the Sarasota High property for preserving the old Sarasota High building and the Sailor Circus campus, so we are land locked. She stated the Board did give this much consideration, but could not find an alternative site for the tennis courts. Student safety and traffic flow in the community is a priority. The Board will look at possibly opening the Brookside tennis courts to the public, which have been closed to the public due to vandalism problems. She feels she is obligated to do the best thing for our students. If the County charges for use of their tennis courts, that is not her issue. She feels you should take that up the County. She stated she appreciated all who sent emails and those who came to the meeting today who spoke respectfully to the School Board.
Caroline Zucker recently saw Annie at Gocio Elementary and stated how wonderful it was. She stated that we have many theater and drama groups in our schools that we are to be proud of.
Jane Goodwin announced that there are 100 slots for Driver Education classes available this summer, June 10-27 at Sarasota High and Venice High, and July 8-25 at Riverview High and North Port High. Students must be 15, be a resident of this county, and have a learners permit. Students can register through our website.
Jane Goodwin congratulated the Venice High baseball team for recently winning the state championship for the second year in a row. There will be a recognition event at Centennial Park in Venice Wednesday, May 22 at 6:30p. The team is poised to take the national high school baseball championship.
Jane Goodwin announced that a retiree reception will follow the Board meeting. Adjournment30. ADJOURNMENTDescription N/A
